What Is SC 189?
This visa is for invited workers, eligible New Zealand citizens and eligible Hong Kong or British National (Overseas) passport holders with skills required in case they want to live and work permanently anywhere in Australia.
This is, you can say, a permanent resident work visa. It gives permission to work and live in Australia. Certain foreign-national skilled workers holding occupations on Australia’s Skilled Occupations List, may get a Subclass 189 visa. For this visa the applicant has to complete a skills test and they should have an employer or family member or should be nominated by a state or territory government.
What are the advantages of a Skilled Independent Work Visa (Subclass 189)?
The Skilled Independent Work Visa provides all the benefits of Australian permanent residence to you and your family.
- Work and live in Australia indefinitely
- Opportunity to study in Australia
- Enroll in Medicare, Australia’s state-run healthcare program
- Opportunity to apply for Australian citizenship
- Sponsor relatives for permanent residence
- Travel in and out of Australia as you please
Also known as visa subclass 189, the SC 189 is a visa stream designed to attract invited workers with specific skills required by the wider Australian community. If anyone fulfills the requirements, they can live, work, and study permanently anywhere in Australia. The subclass 189 visa is points-tested and it's based on specific work skills. If the visa is granted, invited residents benefit from many of the same rights as Australian citizens.
If the Skilled Independent subclass 189 visa is granted, you can also sponsor your relatives to come to Australia, travel to and from the country for 5 years, and become an Australian citizen if you meet all eligibility requirements.
